ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE

I've worked in advertising as a copywriter since before the Y2K bug wreaked havoc on humanity.

In that time I have created a wide array of campaigns for the AFL, launched the Big Bash League for Cricket Australia, re-thought what the University of Melbourne stands for, electrocuted people’s faces for the Melbourne International Film Festival (no, really!), created the global Wrigley’s Extra “Food Creatures”, made a pub with no beer for Schweppes, and launched the first ever truly funny Christmas Crackers for Camp Quality with jokes written by comedians.

In 2016, I was the 16th most awarded copywriter in the world (and the highest ranked in Australia) which made my kids very proud indeed. Well, they said they were. I'm still not sure they were telling the truth- which proves they really are the children of an ad guy.

Help people to become Absolutely Indispensable.

AI talk is EVERYWHERE. Some people think it will replace us all. Others think it will make us superhuman. Most people seem to be somewhere in the middle, trying to work out what the hell it all means.

It truly is one of the most fascinating moments in human history.

For the first time ever, we have machines that can write things, design things, analyse things, summarise things and generate ideas at a speed that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

It’s an extraordinary tool. But it’s also created a slightly worrying new habit, which ironically, creates a massive opportunity for those who plan for it.

Whenever something gets difficult, people ask the computer.

Need an idea? Ask the computer.
Need an answer? Ask the computer.
Need to solve a tricky problem? Ask the computer.

And while that is incredibly convenient, it does raise an interesting question:
What happens to our own brains if we stop using them on the hard things?

The human brain is one of the most remarkable things in the known universe. It has allowed us to build cities, invent aeroplanes, write symphonies, split the atom, create cinema, design sports, cook extraordinary food and come up with the frankly instance (but awesome) idea of pineapple on pizza.

Every idea or business that changed the world began in a human brain.

Not a machine. A human brain. And the thing is, the people who tend to rise to the top of organisations and industries are usually the ones who use that brain particularly well. Like you! :)

They make judgement calls when there isn’t a clear answer. They develop taste. They form opinions. They draw on experience. They decide what matters and what does not. And then they make the call.

Those sorts of decisions have never really been about processing information. They have always been about thinking.

THE ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE PODCAST //

That’s why I’d love you to be on my new podcast.

You are someone who has got to where you are by being inherently human. By having a unique point of view, people skills, and leaning on the knowledge you’ve gleaned from your experience working with lots and lots of humans.

And, I’d love to hear that story, so others can learn about the importance of these so-called “soft-skills” which are all important for this new era of work.

Nothing too serious. Just a chat, over the internet, when the time suits you.

I’ll do all the background work, film it, release it, and provide you with a range of clips to share on your Linkedin, and I’ll do the same.

Two humans taking about why now is the time to become Absolutely Indispendable.
